The beginning of a new era for digital connectivity

A major step forward in internet speed has been made in China. Huawei and China Unicom have teamed up to launch an ultra-fast  “10G” broadband network in Sunan County Hebei Province which is close to Beijing.

This high-speed internet is not based on a brand-new internet standard but refers to the extreme download speed nearly 10 gigabits per second (Gbps).

(i). 10G stands for internet speed reaching up to 10 Gbps or 10G Internet.

(ii). It uses 50G Passive Optical Network (PON) technology.

(iii). This allows much faster internet than current fiber networks in many parts of the world.

(iv). The network was launched through the collaboration of Huawei and China Unicom.

Until now, such high-speed connections were mostly limited to small test projects or very specific areas. But this network in China is the first full-scale commercial deployment of its kind.

How fast is it compared to other countries?

In many parts of the world broadband plans offer speeds that are much lower.

For example:

(i). India: Up to 1 Gbps using fiber optic internet.

(ii). UAE: Speed of 543 mbps on average.

(iii). Qatar: Speed of 521 mbps on average.

The new 10G network in China is several times faster than these countries which sets a new global benchmark for internet performance.

What can 10G broadband do?

Faster internet means more than just quicker downloads and can define the standards how different industries work

1. Entertainment and Media Industries:

(i). 8K video streaming can become smooth and buffer-free.

(ii). Large movies or games can be easily downloaded in seconds.

(iii). Virtual reality and augmented reality experiences will become more realistic.

2. Education Sector:

(i). Online classes can happen in high definition with zero lag.

(ii). Remote learning in rural areas will become more reliable and easy.

(iii). Educational content can be accessed much faster.

3. Healthcare Industries:

(i). Doctors can use connected devices for real-time monitoring and operations.

(ii). Remote surgeries using robotic systems become possible and more accurate.

(iii). High-resolution medical scans can be transferred quickly and easily .

4. Agriculture and Smart Cities Sector:

(i). Smart farming tools can work better with real-time data.

(ii). Sensors and AI systems in smart cities will get faster updates.

(iii). Traffic management and emergency services will respond faster

Speed Differences in homes and offices

(i). Multiple people can stream videos, play games and even can join video calls at the same time with no drop in speed.

(ii). Smart home devices can connect and update in real-time.

(iii). Cloud-based apps and services will load instantly.

Future of Broadband

The rollout of 10G Internet in China shows where the future of internet is headed. It is expected that more regions will start testing and launching similar networks soon.

As per the Chinese tech news outlet MyDrivers – the project uses advanced technologies developed by Huawei one of the world’s leading tech firms.

Along with major telecommunications provider China Unicom is also playing a key role in expanding this network.

With China leading the way, other countries may now consider improving their internet infrastructure. The need for high-speed internet is constantly growing due to the growing demand for cloud computing, AI, smart devices and online services.
