BSNL Launching 4G/5G service
Current and Future Plan
Government-owned telecom company BSNL has installed 15,000 4G towers in states like Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Western UP, and Haryana. Plans to increase to 80,000 by October and add 21,000 more by March 2025.
BSNL, a leading telecom company, will launch 4G soon and 5G in 6-8 months. It aims for a 25% market share by 2025.

The next 1.5 years will be tough for big private companies in the country as government company tariff rates are expected to be lower, especially for 5G. BSNL could challenge Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea with lower tariffs, impacting their competition in upcoming months.
With telecom tariffs rising, people are moving from private companies to BSNL. The government is working on reviving government telecom companies and preparing BSNL for 4G and 5G services.
What is the future target?
By March 2025, BSNL aims to expand 4G services nationwide, transitioning millions of customers from 2G and 3G to cheaper 4G options. The company also plans to launch 5G services by October or November 2025, upgrading existing 4G sites to accommodate the new technology. Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone have already begun offering 5G services, with BSNL expected to follow suit in the near future.

BSNL’s 5G network will be powered by the same technology as its 4G network, featuring a cloud-based architecture compatible with any hardware. Servers handling the core will also remain the same. Telecom minister demonstrated a 5G call on a live 4G network using this core technology at C-DOT’s Delhi campus.
The government telecom company has set up 15,000 4G towers in various regions, with plans to increase to 80,000 by October and 100,000 by March 2025. BSNL issued a Rs 19,000 crore tender to TCS, Tejas Networks, and ITI for a 4G network upgradeable to 5G. A new over-the-air and universal SIM platform for 4G and 5G was announced to launch soon.
Will Jio and Airtel have restless nights because of BSNL?
BSNL aims to achieve a 25 percent share in the telecom industry by 2025, causing concern for Airtel and Jio. The focus is on early rollout of 4G and 5G to enhance quality and retain customers. Currently holding 7.4 percent market share, currently BSNL has 8.63 crore mobile customers.
Government Support to BSNL
About a month ago, private telecom service providers raised their rates by fifteen percent, which prompted many consumers to transfer to BSNL. 2,50,000 consumers had ported to BSNL in less than 15 days. The government has established a project management unit to manage work and ensure prompt completion, and it is actively monitoring the project. The government has allotted Rs 3.2 lakh crore in three payments to help the company get back on track.
