Uttar Pradesh under Yogi government introduced a new social media policy, Uttar Pradesh Digital Media Policy-2024, approved in a cabinet meeting chaired by CM Yogi Adityanath.

The Uttar Pradesh government approved the ‘UP Social Media Policy 2024‘ in a cabinet meeting on 27 August. The policy aims to raise awareness about public welfare schemes and their benefits. Guidelines for advertising recognition for digital media operators and influencers were released on 28 August.
Who will benefit from this?
The new social media policy in Uttar Pradesh applies to digital media entities, influencers, and writers operating both within and outside the state. Those who promote government programs will be linked to the state’s advertisement and public relations department, listed, and provided with advertisements accordingly.
What are the conditions to get advertisement?
- Businesses must be at least two years old to receive advertisements post providing required and related artifacts.
- To apply for listing or receive advertisements, one must submit a digital media analytics report from the past six months. Based on this data, various digital media entities will be categorized accordingly.
- Affidavit needed to show no criminal cases filed against them legally.
- Have proper shooting equipment for creating videos, posts, content.

Opposition’s Criticism on the policy
Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, chaired a recent cabinet meeting when the Yogi management announced the Uttar Pradesh Digital Media Policy-2024.
The policy outlines how companies and firms may advertise on social media
Opposition parties including SP and Congress have criticized the BJP’s policy as a bribe for favoritism. Akhilesh Yadav and Priyanka Gandhi condemned the policy, accusing the BJP of serving lies and promoting corruption with public tax money.
They argue that the policy suppresses truth and democracy, showing a disregard for constitutional values.
Government stand on the media policy – 2024
Minister Sanjay Nishad announced at the UP cabinet meeting that a policy is being developed for regulating social media platforms like Instagram and providing them with advertisements.
In addition, the Uttar Pradesh government declared in a statement that the Digital Media Policy-2024’s punishment for offensive remarks may be as serious as life in the prison. Further the statement claims that the UP government has not authorized any proposal of this kind for the digital media policy.
