IAS officers perform a variety of duties and jobs during the course of their careers. In addition to being the highest ranking official in India, he or she serves as an interface between the public and the government. One of the three All India Services created by the Indian Parliament under the All India Services Act of 1951, the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) is a permanent bureaucracy under the executive branch of government in India.

How to clear exams to Become IAS Officer: Eligibility Criteria

Every year, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), popularly known as the Civil Services test, administers the IAS test to select and hire qualified applicants for the position of IAS officer. The following three steps make up the IAS selection procedure.

First Step: Preliminary test (IAS Prelims): This is a multiple-choice question test consisting of two exams, GS and CSAT. Those who met the cutoff are invited to take the main test. The Preliminary exam scores are not factored into the final exam cutoff.

Second Step: Candidates who pass the preliminary test are invited to take the main written exam, also known as the IAS Mains. Typically, nine subjectively papers are administered in September to assess the candidate’s comprehensive knowledge of a wide range of fields of study. Those who pass the main exam are invited to an interview, and their results are taken into the final cutoff.

Third or Final Step: Final stage of the selection process: UPSC Personality Test (IAS Interview): Selected candidates are called to UPSC headquarters in Delhi, where they are interviewed by a panel of former IAS officials and other prominent members of the community. The ultimate cutoff for the IAS test is established by the combined scores from the mains and interview.

IAS Qualification Standards | Prerequisites

Before attempting any test, the most vital thing a candidate should know is if they are eligible for it or not. Consequently, a summary of IAS eligibility requirements, such as UPSC educational requirements, IAS maximum age restriction, number of attempts, relaxation, etc., is provided in the table below for the convenience of UPSC candidates. In order to be qualified for the UPSC IAS examination, applicants need to meet the following requirements:

Educational Qualification

●      Bachelor’s degree from any recognized university

●      Final year students are eligible to appear for UPSC preliminary exam. However, there are some restrictions:

●     All such candidates who have qualified for the UPSC IAS Main Exam should ensure to confirm that they have qualified the said exam along with the application for IAS Main Exam.

Age Range

●      Unreserved Category and EWS: Candidate age should not be minimum 21 years and more than 32 years.

●      OBC: The age of the candidate should not be at least 21 years and not more than 35 years, however, there is a provision for age relaxation of 3 years for this category.

●      ST/SC: The age of the candidate should be at least 21 years and not more than 37 years, however, there is a provision for age relaxation of 5 years for this category.

Nationality ●      Must be an Indian citizen, or a subject of Bhutan or Tibet or Nepal, and must be a refugee who entered India before January 1, 1962.
Number of Attempts

●      General: 6

●      EWS: 6

●      OBC: 9

●      SC/ST: Candidates of this category have unlimited attempts. (However, they are allowed to appear for the examination until they reach the maximum age limit).

Roles and Responsibilities of IAS Officers

Members of the All India Civil Services, or cadre officers, serve both the federal government and the state governments. IAS officials are also eligible for recruitment to a variety of national and state-level government positions, including those in autonomous bodies, subsidiaries, statutory bodies, staff and line agencies, regulatory organizations, and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). However, laws, policies, and the kinds of assignments they get from government departments define the responsibilities and liabilities of IAS officials. Three categories of assignments are assigned to them: Field Work, Central or State Secretariat, or Public Sector Undertaking (PSU). The most difficult position that an IAS officer may be allocated is a field assignment.

The following are the main responsibilities of IAS officers:

1. Overseeing government activities, including the creation, application, and evaluation of policies.
2. To oversee the implementation of different government programs and directives.
3. Upholding the rule of law.
4. An IAS official is in charge of handling severe accidents, riots, and unforeseen events within his authority.
5. To oversee the use of public monies in accordance with appropriate financial expenditure guidelines.
6. Court duties related to tax matters and revenue collection.
7. Upholding the rule of law.
8. To carry out the duties of District Development Commissioner and Chief Development Officer (CDO).
9. An IAS official is in charge of handling severe accidents, riots, and unforeseen events within his authority.

Additional Tasks for IAS Officers

1. In the Central Government, secretarial positions oversee the development, evaluation, and execution of policies for several ministries.
2. IAS officers in state secretariats assist elected officials on choices pertaining to government procedures and policy formation by drawing on their experience and knowledge.

3. A large number of IAS officials hold senior managerial positions in a variety of PSUs, including industrial facilities and power plants, after being deputed to the PSU cadre.

Monthly Salary Structure of an IAS Officer

IAS officials receive a base salary of Rs 56,100 per year, as per the 7th Central Pay Commission. Additionally, the highest position an IAS official may occupy, cabinet secretary, pays Rs 2.5 lakh a month.

2. Government transport services.
3. There are cooks, gardeners, and other household staff available.
4. While on duty, lodging in government hotels or bungalows is free of charge.
5. Payment of service fees for internet, phone, and mobile devices.
6. Depending on the circumstances, more staff members and security may be needed.
7. In addition, IAS officers get various retirement benefits including a lifelong pension.
8. IAS personnel may be appointed to commissions or tribunals upon their retirement.
9. In addition, IAS officials get a host of additional incentives, including travel and dearness allowances.
